James O'Donnell, Georgetown University Provost and Vice President for Publications of the American Philological Association, discusses the future of scholarly publishing and learned societies. Columbia University Physics professor Erick Weinberg, editor of the American Physical Society journal Physical Review D, responds. In most academic disciplines, learned societies publish important scholarly journals. In turn, subscription sales to these journals can serve as a crucial source of revenue for societies. But the long-term viability of subscription-based society journals is now in question due to dwindling library subscription budgets and the growing number of voices calling for open access to peer-reviewed scholarly journal articles. What is a learned society to do?
